From inference processes to situations of misunderstanding

2022, Kohler, Alaric, Mehmeti, Teuta

In this paper, we describe inferences on a school task, which are reconstructed by the mean of two perspectives from argumentation theory: The pragma-dialectical model and Grize’s natural logic. Both analyses focus on the same item of mathematics, issued from a PISA survey, in order to discuss their specific contribution in elucidating the actual reasoning involved in both the student's answer and the evaluator’s expectations. The mismatch between these two points of view allow us to discuss the potentiality of a situation of misunderstanding. Investigating how specific tasks in particular contexts are interpreted provides a contribution to methodological approaches treating thinking processes as situated and socially negotiated from a diversity of points of views, as for example Inhelder’s (1962 microgenetic approach. In order to extend such analysis to interpretations of discourse, an interdisciplinary approach combining argumentation theory and socio-cognitive psychology is needed. Here, we observed for instance that students may provide the expected answers and still interpret the question or problem differently from the task’s designers (or “teacher”). The meaning of language and other signs, such as graphs or mathematical symbols, cannot be taken for granted when several interlocutors are involved. This issue chiefly concerns argumentation theory, since it raises the question of the integration of specific contexts and points of view in the analysis of argumentation. Therefore, argumentation should be analysed also as a process, and not only as a product; For more detail on this distinction, see for instance Grize (1996) and Kuhn & Udell (2003, 2007).

Elements of Natural Logic for the Study of Unnoticed Misunderstanding in a Communicative Approach to Learning

2017-5-16, Kohler, Alaric

This paper presents a methodology building on Grize’s Natural Logic to study unnoticed misunderstanding in teaching and learning communication. The study of unnoticed misunderstanding is important for education, as misunderstanding has been pointed out as a candidate mechanism for the reproduction of social inequalities at school. It is also a challenge, because most linguistic approaches rely on the interlocutors’ attempts to repair a specific communicative failure for identifying and describing misunderstanding. Additionally, the study of misunderstanding at school requires not only a discursive but also a cognitive approach to understanding, in order to relate the description of misunderstanding to the school subject matter. We present one example of misunderstanding at college, in physics, to illustrate the methodology. I argue that Natural Logic provides a useful theory for relating a communicative level of analysis with a semiotic level, allowing a scientific study of interlocutors’ interpretation here and now.

Studying the Process of Interpretation on a School Task : Crossing Perspectives

2017-6-23, Kohler, Alaric, Mehmeti, Teuta

We are interested in the relation between the expected interpretation of educational tasks and the actual interpretation by students performing the task. In educational settings, it is indeed common for a task designer to set specific expectations in terms of task’s interpretation and in terms of what students should produce as answers or solutions. However, students do not always succeed in inferring the designers’ intentions and expectations. In this case, the responsibility of this failure is generally attributed to the students, and considered as a lack of knowledge or skill. Yet, before attributing students' failure in a task to their lack of knowledge or skill, one must verify wherever the task has been understood in the same way as intended. Otherwise, there is a risk to attribute a cognitive deficit to students who are actually answering a different question or problem. In this case, the failure of the task is due to a situation of misunderstanding rather than to a lack of cognitive ability. In this paper we will analyze such situation of misunderstanding, by the mean of two analytical models that allow for detailed descriptions of the mismatch between the expected inferences and the actual inferences made by students. For each analytical approach, we will present one example. The first example provides an analysis of students’ answers in an item of mathematics from the survey PISA. The analysis is inspired by the pragma-dialectical model proposed by Van Eemeren and colleagues and serves to shed light on the diversity of students’ arguments as opposed to the arguments expected by PISA designers. The second example provides an analysis of a peer argumentation in a group of students solving a problem in mechanics. Grize’s logico-discursive operations permit a micro-scale description of a misunderstanding between two students about what they should be doing. We’ll show how this situation of misunderstanding accounts for the argumentative episode. These examples call for an investigation of the process of interpretation about specific tasks and in specific educational contexts. We observed, for instance, that students may provide the expected answers or solutions and still interpret the question or problem differently from the designer. The meaning of language and other signs, such as graphs or mathematical symbols, cannot be taken for granted when several interlocutors are involved : Each one may have a different interpretation of the same signs, and probably will. A psychological investigation of interpretation processes can only be carried in relation to specific tasks and specific contexts as the meaning is not contained in the signs interlocutors are interpreting, contrary to the information processing metaphor. The interpretation process itself may be approached as situated and socially negotiated inference process. In this sense, argumentation theories are useful, but must also be adapted to the specificity of a psychological investigation of (inter)subjectivity, e.g. articulating several perspectives on the same task.

Abstract: This research draws from empirical observations of newtonian physics teaching and learning activities at school, to propose a theorization of learning as a multi-dimensional process. In order to overcome known issues with research perspectives focusing on student’s individual conceptions, it takes into consideration the student’s own pathway of thinking (cheminement de pensée) relatively to communicative and social processes situated within its ecological context, and relatively to historical, cultural and semiotic processes, which are constitutive of the knowledge being taught. Such processes are brought to light with the analysis of critical incidents, emerging from the class activities in its ecological context, for each of which an investigation is carried out in order to decide wherever there is, or is not, a situation of misunderstanding, that could provide an explanation for students’difficulties in learning, alternative or complementary to explanations in terms of individual misconceptions frequently used in literature. In order to investigate situations of misunderstanding during science learning, several theoretical frameworks are coordinated, taken from psychology, communication sciences, language studies, semiology and educational sciences. The integrative (1) approach is funded on a perspectivist epistemology, without any claim to a general theory of learning : the coordination of the various theoretical frameworks is made for the singular research presented here, as the scientific theorization of a particular case. The students’ activities under study constitutes a particular case, at least for resulting from the implementation of a teaching sequence aiming at classroom discussion, argumentation, and inquiry learning. These pedagogical objectives are supported by the use of specifically designed tools in information and communication technology (ICT), and by the social organisation of the classroom activities into small groups of students, regulated exchange among peers, etc. These specific features of the teaching sequence allow for studying learning with an innovative teaching sequence and in the complexity of its natural environment, notably thanks to the high production of verbal interactions among peers, which are providing the empirical traces for microscale scrutiny of the students learning processes. The research results do not aim at generalizing the influence of any specific variable on learning, nor the tendency to have more or less frequently situations of misunderstanding emerging ; Rather, it proposes a new outlook on old and sturdy issues, notably a new interpretation for (some) issues so far addressed in literature as the problem of students own conceptions, which are here considered as constructed during the actual school activity and through the hasty evaluation made by teachers, when interpreting the all too short answers provided by students, most often ambiguous. Addressing the issue of situation of misunderstanding in teaching and learning activities, allows to set students and teachers on equal ground, and lead to consider the complex communication and thought processes all interlocutors are involved in, of which the occasional failures cannot be easily attributed to one or the other individual without oversimplifying it. Hence, the scientific contribution of this philosophical dissertation rests on the integrated theorization of a complex phenomena, and includes the elaboration of a method of analysis of situations of misunderstanding allowing a continuity, in the discourse produced by the researcher, from the theoretical discussion to the empirical observations, and vice versa. Each analysis of a situation of misunderstanding constitutes a specific inquiry. Such inquiries are focusing on three levels of observation : (1) the meaning making from each of the various points of view involved, be it from students or teachers, (2) the interactions, which allows to approach social processes in the meaning making, such as it emerges from the actual interactions, and (3) the interlocutary situation, which allows to study each situation of misunderstanding in its own singularity, as in case studies, and provides a referential in order to decide, during the analysis of meaning making, wherever there is - or not - some divergence between various points of view. Analysis on multi-levels allow the researcher to approach meaning without having to attribute it to a specific individual, to reconstruct the way such meaning may flow throughout the sequence, and to make hypotheses on the singular way it makes sense from the point of view of the teacher and of particular students at specific moments. These analyses allow, subsequently, the researcher to explicitly discuss the various points of view adopted by students and by the teacher, relatively to the classical knowledge in Newton Mechanics, without having to judge wherever it is “true” or “false”. Results show that some of the students’ difficulties in learning physics are precisely related to misunderstandings occuring during history of science, that Newton encountered during his theorizing process. (1) This term most importantly refers here to the intention of an explicit coordination of the selected perspectives, and to the care taken in the coherence of both the selection and the epistemological compatibility of the related perspectives.
