La collaboration, enjeu d’une réforme de politique cantonale du vieillissement

Confronté au changement démographique, le canton de Neuchâtel (Suisse) lance en 2012 une réforme socio-sanitaire visant à développer les possibilités de vieillissement à domicile. Accompagnée d’une reconfiguration importante du réseau de soins, d’aide et d’accompagnement des personnes âgées, cette réforme requiert la collaboration entre personnes et institutions impliquées. Mais en quoi consiste exactement cette collaboration, sur quels objets porte-t-elle et quelles sont les conditions qui la favorisent ? Abordant ces questions du point de vue de la psychologie socioculturelle et autres approches apparentées, nous mettons l’accent sur le travail d’articulation nécessaire à la cohérence des activités des personnes et institutions impliquées dans le réseau, et sur les tensions qui s’exercent entre ces activités. Nous examinons les conditions qui permettent à ces tensions de renforcer le pouvoir d’agir des diverses intervenantes. Nous présentons une étude de terrain qui, recourant à une méthodologie compréhensive (entretiens, observations et recherche documentaire), suit la mise en œuvre de cette réforme. Après avoir décrit l’hétérogénéité du réseau mis en place, nous rapportons une série d’exemples qui illustrent certaines tensions entre activités et pointent quelques obstacles au travail d’articulation. En conclusion, nous soulignons l’importance de développer les conditions qui favorisent le travail d’articulation et permettent à chaque personne impliquée de faire face aux aléas du travail et d’élargir son pouvoir d’agir. C’est dire que le travail d’articulation contribue au fonctionnement du réseau et, plus largement, à la mise en place de la réforme, et ceci au même titre que le développement de nouvelles structures et institutions.

Learning and developing over the life-course : A sociocultural approach

This article introduces the special issue “Learning and Developing over the Life-Course: A Sociocultural Approach”, which collects six papers stemming from the project “Ages for Learning and Growth: Sociocultural Perspectives” (AGILE), supported by the European Association for Research on Learning and Instruction. Considering that sociocultural psychology has mainly focused on development and learning in children, adolescents or (young) adults, AGILE aims at exploring learning and development in older people's lives. To do so, theoretical concepts and methodological tools used in research on other developmental periods had to be reconfigured and enlarged. The article first presents the main theoretical and methodological assumptions underlying sociocultural psychology, and shows the challenges of applying them to older people. Each of the six papers (by Aleksander Baucal, Michèle Grossen, Pernille Hviid, Kyoko Murakami, Roger Säljö, Fabienne Tarrago Salamin, Isabelle Tournier and Tania Zittoun) is then briefly introduced. In conclusion, the article emphasises the importance of accounting for the situatedness of older persons' activities, the meaning they give to these, and their experience of ageing. Methodologies that recognise the expertise of the persons participating in a study, and include them as active participants, are also called for.

Interaction ou inter-actions? Deux conceptions de la notion d'interaction

This article aims at discussing two main definitions of the concept of interaction: the first one assumes that an interaction is the sum of individual actions (inter-actions) while the second one assumes that interaction is an inseparable unit of analysis. They constitute what can be called a factorial vs. dialogical conception of interaction. After having presented these two conceptions and shown some gaps between theoretical assumptions and methodological practices, we discuss what methodological consequences for research a dialogical conception of interaction may have, provide the example of a study which tried to take these consequences into account, and conclude with some challenges that have to be faced in future research.

Creating new spheres of experience in the transition to a nursing home

Drawing on sociocultural psychology, we sketch out a new approach to the development of persons in old age, especially when they enter a nursing home and start a new life there. Based on the results of a qualitative case study of a nursing home in Switzerland, we examine both the social and material conditions of living in a nursing home, and look at how they are linked to residents' subjective experience and sense of self-continuity (Erikson & Erikson, 1998). Data collection includes, first, documentation of the institutional and organizational background of the nursing home; second, observations of the institutional life and interviews with the manager, staff, and some of the residents' family members, in order to find out how the nursing home operated on a daily basis; third, interviews with the residents themselves, in order to understand their subjective experience and their use of time and space. Analysis showed that the residents displayed creativity in transforming the given environment into new personal spheres of experience. They also created distal spheres of experience, through the use of various symbolic resources and objects. In so doing, they called up vivid memories of their past, as well as imaginary explorations of alternative presents and possible futures. These imaginary explorations supported their personal continuity, as well as their engagement and imagination. We highlight the theoretical and practical implications of our findings.

La parole de l'autre dans l'entretien clinique

As a method, clinical interview has given way to numerous publications and is taught to future practitioners in various professions. However, it is not only a method: as a shared professional practice, it is also a genre based upon legitimised practices and contributing to create a community of practice. In this respect, it echoes the voices of others. Moreover, clinical interview is a communication situation between two or more participants. Nevertheless, it cannot be reduced to face-to-face interactions. From a dialogical standpoint, it consists of a dialogue, which develops between present participants but also with absent third parties. Hence, it expands beyond the present instant of the encounter. The interweaving of a dialogue between present participants and a distant dialogue with absent third parties creates a complex dialogical space, which is part of the therapeutic process.

Réformes politiques face au vieillissement démographique: Diversité des perspectives dans la mise en oeuvre d'une politique socio-sanitaire

Partant du constat du changement démographique et des réformes qui tentent d’y répondre, nous nous penchons sur le programme politique d’un canton suisse, la planification médico-sociale du canton de Neuchâtel, et en particulier sur la promotion d’appartements dits « avec encadrements », qui constitue une mesure centrale de cette planification. Considérant que la mise en oeuvre de cette réforme, et ces appartements en particulier, demandent la collaboration entre un grand nombre de personnes et d’institutions (architectes, services administratifs cantonaux, politicien-nes, personnes âgées entre autres), nous examinons le sens que différent-es acteurs/trices donnent à la situation dans laquelle ils/elles sont impliqué-e-s sous l’angle de ce qui leur importe, ou « what matters » (Edwards, 2012), en analysant des données récoltées dans le cadre d’une étude de cas régionale, incluant entretiens, observations et recherche documentaire. Nous examinons également des situations de rencontre entre différentes perspectives sur « ce qui importe », et mettons en évidence la manière dont ces rencontres peuvent engendrer des changements dans la perspective de chacun-e concernant « ce qui importe », et donc dans les pratiques.

L'explication du diabète dans une séance d'éducation thérapeutique : une activité discursive contribuant au développement professionnel des soignants

Drawing on sociocultural psychology, the clinic of activity and discourse analysis, this study analysed a session of health education that brought together a nurse, Inès, and an adolescent living with diabetes. It aimed, first, at investigating the mechanisms of shared understanding and reciprocity involved in explanations, second, at bringing about professional development. It analysed an explanation sequence and in a second step used a method that confronted the nurse to her activity (method of simple and cross self-confrontation). Results showed that in the session of health education, medical discourse tended to dominate, and created a strong asymmetry between the participants, thus raising doubts about the patient’s comprehension. Whereas in the simple self-confrontation Inès’ comments focused on the patient’s comprehension and emotional states, in the cross self-confrontation, her colleague’s comments led her to question her own emotional states and interpretations. The method of self-confrontation seems then adequate to capture the psychological mechanisms underlying the explanations provided by practitioners and to foster a form of professional development

Boundary Crossing Events and Potential Appropriation Space in Philosophy, Literature and General Knowledge

Teaching cultural elements, such as literary texts, pieces of music, films, sculptures, and other similar artefacts, is one of the educational aims of a school. As part of our past and present society, cultural elements are considered to be fundamental. At a social level, they belong to shared bodies of knowledge which might foster social cohesion; at the level of individuals, they are expected to play a fundamental role in the students— intellectual and emotional development and in their capacity to act as future citizens. In the present state-of-the-art, however, more research is needed into the way in which the cultural elements taught at school are used by students as resources for emotional elaboration and developmental processes.
