This article focuses on Lope’s Rimas (1604) to analyze the erotic elements in some of the book’s two-hundred sonnets. In order to do so, and after a brief state of the art on eroticism in Golden Age literature, we advance some methodological questions that we will examine later in the Rimas, a corpus that we analyze underscoring those sonnets that critics have defined as «erotic», as well as those that we add to the list because of their sexual content. In particular, we will classify these texts according to the different meanings we give to the word «erotic», on the one hand, and, on the other, according to the different characteristics of the topic, be it in relation to poetic subgenres (burlesque, mythological) or in their degree of eroticism. Finally, we will reflect on the evolution of Lope’s erotic poetry during Philip III’s reign, during which the Rimas were published.
