Foams of togetherness in the digital age: Sloterdijk, software sorting and Foursquare
The article brings together Peter Sloterdijk's theory of spheres and literatures on the socio-spatial implications of the functioning of software. By examining the growing personalization of search results for recreational places on spatial media like Foursquare, we make the case for Sloterdijk's conceptualization of “foam” offering an interesting contribution to the analysis and critique of contemporary algorithmic life, in particular with regard to the liquidity and fragility of the forms of togetherness in “co-isolation” created by such applications. In emphasizing the impermanence and ambiguities of these fleeting mediations, the article also points to the politics of these algorithmic foams, whose logics of categorization and socio-spatial sorting become increasingly difficult to understand, politically address or challenge.

Drawing upon police statistics, this paper explores the impacts of the videosurveillance cameras (CCTV) installed in November 2014 in the Pâquis neighborhood in Geneva. It focuses on the evolution of criminality within the filmed perimeter and nearby settings. This analysis completes a previous article on the perceived safety of residents (Klauser and Kaenzig, 2017). In line with former studies, our results underline the limited preventive effects of the CCTV system. The analysis shows that cameras are inducing criminality displacement, mainly of drug trafficking. Overall, this study provides a differentiated and complex image of CCTV systems as instruments of territorialization of monitored areas.

Surveillance farm: Towards a research agenda on Big Data agriculture
Farming today relies on ever-increasing forms of data gathering, transfer, and analysis. Think of autonomous tractors and weeding robots, chip-implanted animals and underground infrastructures with inbuilt sensors, and drones or satellites offering image analysis from the air. Despite this evolution, however, the social sciences have almost completely overlooked the resulting problematics of power and control. This piece offers an initial review of the main surveillance issues surrounding the problematic of smart farming, with a view to outlining a broader research agenda into the making, functioning, and acting of Big Data in the agricultural sector. For surveillance studies, the objective is also to move beyond the predominant focus on urban space that characterises critical contemporary engagements with Big Data. Smart technologies shape the rural just as much as the urban, and “smart farms” are just as fashionable as “smart cities.”

Professional drone usage in Switzerland : results of a quantitative survey of public and private drone users

In recent years, drones have become much more accessible as professional tools for public and private actors. The technology has been integrated into everyday working routines and has created new professional fields. These developments have sparked increased media attention and socio-political debate regarding the opportunities and risks of drone use, and the necessary regulatory response. However, in Switzerland as elsewhere, no detailed study has explored who uses drones, when, where and for what reasons. Addressing this research lacuna, this paper summarizes the main findings of a quantitative survey of public and private drone users in Switzerland. On this basis, the paper highlights the extent, modalities and expected future evolutions of professional drone usage in the country and underscores the related key issues, in economic, privacy- and security-related terms. The paper thus informs citizens, public agencies and the private sector of the various dimensions and effects of current evolutions in the field of drone utilization, raises awareness of the advantages and problems of the technology and, ultimately, favours critical democratic debate.
