Abstract
This article analyzes the metaphorical structure of Lope de Vega’s De cosario a cosario focusing on two recurrent semantic fields: the field of sailing and the one related to “picar” (‘to bite’, ‘to incite’). After a brief review of criticism on De cosario a cosario, we examine both the quantitative weight and the logic and derivations of the two metaphors in question, which will lead us to elucidate the play’s hidden structure and some of Lope’s literary habits.
