Abstract
Since Flower & Hayes' (1981) influential cognitive model of writing, much research has been devoted to the investigation of writing processes. Nevertheless, we still know little about the role and function of spelling in the writing process. This article introduces the computer-based method of keystrokelogging combined with the verbalisation method of stimulated-recal as means of investigating orthographic competence, defined as a bundle of knowledge, strategies and procedures. On the basis of a detailed investigation of a writing session the problematic aspects of the categories pause and revision are addressed.
