Résumé
Prétendre que la police est utile en matière de lutte contre la criminalité et l’insécurité tient de l’hypothèse, voire du mythe. Prétendre le contraire, tient toutefois tout autant de l’hypothèse, ce même si chaque infraction commise représente en réalité un échec du travail de prévention de la police. Les criminologues ne savent donc pas grand-chose en la matière… Le présent texte relate une tentative – avortée – de mettre de telles hypothèses à l’épreuve de la réalité dans une ville suisse.
To claim that the police are useful in the fight against crime and insecurity is a hypothesis, not to say a myth. To claim the contrary, however, is just as much a hypothesis, even if every offence committed actually represents a failure of the police’s preventive work. Consequently, criminologists don’t know much about this subject... This article describes a – failed – attempt to test such hypotheses in a Swiss city.
