This paper examines how Manuel Chaves Nogales uses football in Juan Belmonte, matador de toros (1935) as a metaphor of the inexorable and menacing changes that hung over his world and Belmonte’s. After presenting the two passages in which football appears in the novel, and a third and fourth passages in a liminal text, we delve into the context that explains the work and the above-mentioned references. In the first place, we examine the book’s publication context, and the expectations to which it answered, as well as Chaves Nogales’ work at the time. In the second place, we study the structure and interests of the work and we provide a small state of the question about it. Finally, we return to the use of football in the work to justify our interpretation of the pertinent passages.
