;Fabian FleißnerAbstract This study investigates German verbo-nominal constructions of the type [auf/unterPP & stehen/stellen/setzen], which have been classified in previous research under the broader phenomenon of “Funktionsverbgefüge” (FVG). While some studies treat FVG as a unified category (von Polenz 1987; Helbig 1979; Kamber 2008), others focus on specific (families of) constructions and their unique properties (Zeschel 2008; Kabatnik 2020; Fleischhauer 2022). This study is a first step toward a typology of German verbal multi-word constructions that dispenses with the assumption of a category of FVG. The aim is to demonstrate that many structures traditionally discussed under this term actually belong to entirely different types of constructions. Consequently, any attempt at overarching categorization proves to be fundamentally flawed. Our analysis concludes that constructions with the pattern [auf/unterPP & stehen/stellen/setzen] can be classified into four distinct groups based on structural and semantic parameters. In none of the identified construction types systematic (= functional) differences can be observed that are attributable to the verbal element when the overall schematic (= constructional) meaning remains constant. We therefore argue that these constructions should not be classified as FVG. - PublicationAccès libreRecent Changes in the Notion of Grammaticalization and the Rise of Alternative Concepts(2025)This paper deals with the “modern” notion of grammaticalization as it has been developed in the 1980s. It is since the programmatic study by Christian Lehmann that the research on grammaticalization has received increasing interest and resulted in a large body of work. However, for the last two or three decades the interest in research on grammaticalization seems to be rather fading. Even more, the concept of grammaticalization is being gradually ousted by alternative notions such as constructionalization and constructional change. I will focus on the relevant paradigmatic changes which have occurred within the framework of grammaticalization research dating from the 1980s. At least two significant shifts occurred during this time, mainly due to the steadily increasing amount of extensive empirical studies on grammaticalization and due to the shift of interest from formal to functional aspects of diachronic processes. First, a shift occurred from the loss aspect towards the rearrangement aspect. Second, the conceptualization of the locus of change has been widened from single elements to constructions. With respect to the latter aspect, the growing interest in constructionist approaches to language structure has decisively influenced this shift of perspective. In light of these recent changes, the ultimate question will be whether the concept of grammaticalization as it has been originally introduced is still needed or whether it would be better to abandon it altogether and to use instead other concepts proposed in the most recent literature.

; Vanessa StöberAbstractThe paper presents the results of a diachronic study of the light verb constructions containing the German verbkommen‘come’ accompanied by a prepositional phrase containing a deverbal noun and the prepositionzu‘to’. The analysis is based on the corpus data from the DTA (DeutschesTextarchiv) between 1600 and 1900. The aim of the paper is to integrate traditional grammatical descriptions ofFunktionsverbgefügewith grammaticalization and lexicalization approaches as well as with more recent usage-based constructionist approaches. In doing so, the view of composite predicates as more or less grammaticalized or more or less lexicalized constructions will be challenged by offering empirical evidence in favor of a more diversified account. It will be argued that it is often a matter of the methodological perspective as to which particular status is assigned to a structure under investigation. - PublicationAccès libre

It addresses two aspects of modality and constructions by relating directly to questions raised in the introduction to this volume: the notion of the paradigm in Construction Grammar on the one hand and the nature of the links within the constructional network model on the other. By investigating the network of syntactic constructions of reported directives in German, the paper focuses on the modelling of two types of horizonal paradigmatic links between these constructions: the links between allostructions and the links between paradigmatic choices. On the conceptual level, the paper argues that these two types of paradigmatic links constitute two different types of horizontal links in the network. On the empirical level, the study demonstrates how these horizontal links manifest themselves in the corpus data.
