Abstract
Mixing specialist language registers and everyday language is a phenomenon that can be increasingly observed in public communication about scientific subjects. There are two questions of interest: <br> (1) How can we develop a model for describing some dynamic changes of meaning within different contexts? <br> (2) What is the impact of these possibilities on our understanding of science and science communication? <br>Concerning (1): we present the hypothesis that technical terms (language for special purposes) lose their meaning (or parts of it) within every day contexts, whereas everyday expressions gain some technical meaning in corresponding contexts. By means of discourse and text analysis we demonstrate this with some examples from sustainability discourse. The results are presented in terms of knowledge schemata. Concerning (2): we will focus on the risk of misunderstanding professional scientific work.
