Abstract
This paper points out that the use of the multifunctional expression 'also' could be interpreted as an indicator of text competence in students' writings. Based on the current state of linguistic research, a system of categories is developed in order to analyse a corpus of student texts. The corpus comprises more than 1,000 texts from different grades. Despite the small occurrence of the expression 'also' in the corpus, the results of our analysis show that students from higher grades use this expression not only in a more text genre-specific way but also in a more literacy-specific way.
