Abstract
Let Gamma be a group; let kappa(Gamma) : Gamma(ab) --> K-1(C-r*(Gamma)) be the canonical homomorphism from the abelianized group Gamma(ab) to the K-1-group of the reduced C*-algebra C-r*(Gamma). We give a new, purely C*-algebraic proof of a result of Elliott and Natsume [10] asserting that kappa(Gamma) is rationally injective. The relation with the Baum-Connes conjecture is discussed.
