Zaloma: cantos marineros en la literatura del Siglo de Oro (Eugenio de Salazar, Damián Salucio del Poyo, Lope de Vega Carpio)

Este trabajo examina cuatro casos de zalomas en textos de finales del reinado de Felipe II y comienzos del de Felipe III: la “Carta al licenciado Miranda de Ron”, de Eugenio de Salazar, El peregrino en su patria y El valor de las mujeres, de Lope de Vega, y La vida y muerte de Judas, de Damián Salucio del Poyo. Para poder entender estas zalomas, las únicas que se conservan en nuestra literatura, comenzaremos estableciendo el sentido del término, o más bien las dudas que existen al respecto, que ilustraremos con obras lexicográficas y náuticas desde el siglo XVI. Sobre esta base, analizamos los cuatro textos en cuestión, examinando su papel en la obra, su estructura y mecánica, y explicando cómo contribuyen a comprender el fenómeno de la zaloma.

This paper examines four cases of zalomas (sailorly chants) in texts dating from the end of the reign of Philip II and the beginning of that of Philip III: Eugenio de Salazar’s “Carta al licenciado Miranda de Ron”, Lope de Vega’s El peregrino en su patria and El valor de las mujeres, and Damián Salucio del Poyo’s La vida y muerte de Judas. In order to understand these zalomas, the only ones preserved in our literature, we will first establish the meaning of the term, or rather the doubts about it, which we will illustrate with lexicographical and nautical works from the seventeenth to the twentieth century. Using this basis, we will analyze the four songs in question, examining their role in the work, their structure, and mechanics, and explaining how they contribute to understanding what a zaloma is a how it worked.
