Kokoschka was considered, even in his own lifetime, one of the greatest portraitists of the twentieth century. In the catalogue published by the Badischer Kunstverein to accompany its 1966 exhibition in Karlsruhe – a show devoted exclusively to portraits by his hand spanning a period of approximately sixty years – the organizers stressed that Kokoschka ‘influenced, as none other, the portrait in the first half of the century’.
