Abstract

ABSTRACT
Rational homology balls Bp,q, for coprime integers 0 < q < p, and their quantitative refinements, the pin-ellipsoids Ep,q(α, β) and pin-balls Bp,q(α) := Ep,q(α, α), form a natural class of Liouville domains whose skeleta are Lagrangian (p, q)-pinwheels. These are immersed Lagrangian disks with singular locus along their boundary. From the perspective of almost toric fibrations, pinellipsoids generalise ordinary symplectic ellipsoids; from the perspective of singularity theory, the rational homology balls Bp,q arise as the Milnor fibres of certain cyclic quotient singularities. This thesis studies both quantitative and qualitative aspects of their symplectic topology.
On the quantitative side, we investigate two symplectic embedding problems: embeddings of pin-balls into pin-cylinders and embeddings of pin-ellipsoids into CP2. For the first problem, we prove that Gromov’s non-squeezing theorem continues to hold in the pin-setting. For the second problem, we show that, for each pair (p, q) consisting of a Markov number p and one of its companion numbers q, the set of all (α, β) ∈ R2 >0 for which there exists a symplectic embedding Ep,q(α, β) ,→ CP2 has the structure of an infinite staircase, generalising the classical Fibonacci staircase discovered by McDuff and Schlenk. A key ingredient is an isotopy theorem asserting that any two such embeddings are ambiently Hamiltonian isotopic. We also prove sharp constraints for pairs of disjoint pin-ball embeddings.
On the qualitative side, we establish Arnold’s nearby Lagrangian conjecture for pinwheels: any two embeddings of Lagrangian (p, q)-pinwheels in Bp,q are related by a compactly supported
Hamiltonian isotopy. The proof combines neck-stretching, the symplectic rational blowup, and the computation of the compactly supported symplectic mapping class group of Bp,q, which is generated by a natural twist about the pinwheel, the pintwist τp,q, analogous to the usual Dehn–Seidel twist.
As applications of the methods developed in this thesis, we give a new proof of the local Lagrangian unknotting theorem of Eliashberg and Polterovich, and show that the only Lagrangian pinwheels in Bp,q are of (p, q)-type.
We hope that, taken together, these results establish the rational homology balls Bp,q, their Lagrangian skeleta, and their quantitative refinements as natural objects of study in symplectic topology by showing that they provide robust rational-homology analogues of balls, ellipsoids, and cotangent bundles, extending several classical theorems in symplectic geometry to a singular and arithmetically rich setting.
