‘New’ migration and new forms of integration: Families in geographical itinerancy

This project is part of the NCCR "On the move: The mobility-migration nexus" directed by prof. Gianni d'Amato.
It proposes to examine the daily strategies of families of international managers or diplomats who come to Switzerland for a limited time. How, on a daily basis, do they interact with their Swiss environment? Do they master the local languages, develop networks with long-term Swiss residents, or do they participate to local communities? Examining short term, highly qualified immigrants – an extreme case “new immigration” – this project has thus various goals: 1) on a theoretical level, to question the traditional criteria of psychosocial “integration”; 2) on an empirical level, to describe the specific modalities of adjustment of short term immigrants; 3) on a policy level, to make recommendations for a smoother adjustment of these families.

; ; This paper proposes a sociocultural perspective of mobility, of which migration is only one case, with a focus on mobile families. Consistent with mobility studies, sociocultural psychology of the lifecourse proposes to study both the sociocultural conditions of mobility, and the perspective of mobile people. In addition, in this article, we consider interrelated lives in mobility. We discuss the specific case of one family documented as part of a larger research project on repeated geographical mobility, and highlight the specificities of the context, the experiences of each family member, and some of their overlapping spheres of experiences. At the same time, more precarious and flexible conditions, ranging from unemployment, to temporary, free-lance and self-employed occupations, now characterize the mobile trajectories of a large number of professionals and their partners. What is the emotional cost of these conditions in mobility? How do mobile professionals’ partners feel and deal with feeling rules regarding unemployment and job search when moving? The article examines the case of Switzerland, by exploring the experience of mobile professionals’ partners.
