Abstract
Nuclear energy has reentered Swiss policy discussions, as wind farm projects continue to face local opposition despite broad public support. This study draws on Cultural Theory and Schwartz’s theory of basic human values to examine the value-based determinants of wind energy acceptance and relative preferences between wind and nuclear power. Using SHEDS data, the results show that collective welfare orientations are associated with stronger wind energy acceptance and preferences. Orientations toward personal interests and success are associated with stronger relative preferences for nuclear power. Overall, the findings suggest that energy preferences are broadly associated with underlying value orientations. They reflect an alignment between the broad characteristics of specific energy technologies and these orientations. A persistent regional pattern for Romandie, not accounted for by the value orientations examined in this study, points to other value-based or contextual factors not captured by the framework. This study also provides a basis for future research examining whether responses to compensation schemes vary with individuals’ value orientations.
