Title
Ad for Oscillatom B 5000
Description
Following the 1967 International and Universal Exposition in Montreal, where the Oscillatom B 5000 played a prominent role in the Swiss Pavilion, Ebauches SA, the parent company of Oscilloquartz, sought to capitalize on the publicity generated by the fair through a broader international promotional campaign. This advertisement presents the Oscillatom as a symbol of Swiss technological modernity and explicitly associates atomic timekeeping with space research. It notes that, during a tour of major timekeeping centres, an Oscillatom stopped at NASA to provide “Swiss time,” while another instrument was operating as a time and frequency standard at the rocket-launching station at Kiruna, Sweden. The Earth–Moon imagery dramatizes the clock’s advertised relative accuracy of 1E-11, expressed for a general audience as the equivalent of an error of only about 4 mm in measuring the approximately 400,000 km distance between the Earth and the Moon.
