D’une socialité populaire à l’interprétation du monde. Une ethnographie de trois clubs de twirling bâton en Suisse romande sous l’angle de l’engagement collectif

Les institutions reposant sur le loisir organisé telles que les clubs de sport, fortement implantés en Suisse, méritent une attention, tout particulièrement dans une perspective de production d’identités sociales affirmatives. En effet, l’engagement au sein d’associations est d’actualité en Suisse et éclaire les rapports entre la société civile et les institutions. Cette thèse de doctorat a pour but d’ouvrir une réflexion sur la vie associative et sur la manière dont une activité sportive populaire et peu légitime, en l’occurrence le twirling bâton, peut être l’espace-temps d’une production du politique, c’est-à-dire le lieu d’une expérience entendue comme le déploiement d’une réflexivité et d’une capacité d’interprétation du monde. Les clubs sportifs à composantes populaires, par leurs sociabilités et par l’activité proposée, sont les lieux d’une expérience politique entendue comme acquisition d’un point de vue sur le monde, sur ses injustices et sur certaines modalités de déni de reconnaissance. L’épistémologie retenue pour cette étude s’éloigne d’une sociologie hégémonique. Elle tend à éviter un regard surplombant sur les actrices étudiées pour privilégier la compréhension des expériences et des sens qu’elles donnent à leurs actions. En ce sens, elle s’inscrit dans une perspective pragmatiste. Par une immersion de longue durée, l’ethnographie « double », du populaire et du politique, permet de rendre compte des gestes et des paroles qui eux, révèlent une façon de voir le monde. Analyser la socialité, c’est-à-dire les expériences, relations au monde environnant et activités spécifiques aux clubs retenus à travers une enquête empirique (35 observations, 16 entretiens collectifs, 20 entretiens individuels et des analyses documentaires) permet de comprendre ce que la vie associative produit en termes de perception critique du fonctionnement de la société, de participation et de reconnaissance. Les clubs retenus pour cette étude sont trois clubs de twirling bâton situés en Suisse romande, dans lesquels sont engagées essentiellement des femmes et des jeunes filles. Non seulement la population concernée occupe une position minoritaire dans l’espace social, mais l’activité qu’est le twirling bâton est aussi dévalorisée sur le plan sportif. Ainsi, la caractéristique principale d’un tel terrain de recherche est qu’il est « petit », par ses composantes populaires et féminines (interactions, chorégraphies, costumes…), mais aussi par ses ressources moindres (matériel ou financier). Ce travail a donc pour souci de mettre en lumière la vie associative, le populaire et le politique à partir d’une « expérience ordinaire » et quotidienne, c’est-à-dire à partir d’un terrain délaissé par la société et en l’occurrence, les chercheur·e·s.

Institutions based on organized leisure, such as sports clubs, which have a strong presence in Switzerland, deserve attention, particularly from the perspective of producing affirmative social identities. Indeed, commitment in associations is a topical issue in Switzerland, and sheds light on the relationship between civil society and institutions. The aim of this doctoral thesis is to reflect on associative life and on the way in which a sporting activity that is popular and has little resonance, in this case baton twirling, can be the space-time of a production of the political, i.e. the place of an experience understood as the deployment of a reflexivity and a capacity to interpret the world. Through their sociability and the activities they offer, sports clubs with popular components are sites of political experience, understood as the acquisition of a point of view on the world, its injustices and certain forms of denial of recognition. The epistemology adopted for this study moves away from a hegemonic sociology. It tends to avoid an overhanging view of the actresses studied, in favor of an understanding of the experiences and meanings they give to their actions. In this sense, it situates itself in a pragmatist perspective. Through long-term immersion, the "double" ethnography of the popular and the political enables us to account for gestures and words that reveal a way of seeing the world. Analyzing sociality, i.e. the experiences, relationships with the surrounding world and activities specific to the clubs selected through an empirical survey (35 observations, 16 group interviews, 20 individual interviews and documentary analyses) enables us to understand what associative life produces in terms of critical perception of how society works, of participation and of recognition. The clubs chosen for this study are three baton twirling clubs in French-speaking Switzerland, in which mainly women and girls are involved. Not only does the population concerned occupy a minority position in the social arena, but the activity of baton twirling is also devalued in sporting terms. Thus, the main characteristic of such a research field is that it is "small", in terms of its popular and feminine components (interactions, choreography, costumes...), but also in terms of its lesser resources (material or financial). The aim of this work is therefore to shed light on associative, popular and political life from an "ordinary", everyday experience, that is, from a field neglected by society and, in this case, by researchers.
