Abstract
Based on participant observation and biographical interviews conducted in a bilingual class at the French-(Swiss)German language border in Switzerland, the present contribution shows how belongings and differences are constructed in this field. The social arrangement of the school class is conceptualized, with reference to Norbert Elias, as a figuration of fluid power balances. The contribution discusses how language borders and the two language groups "French speaking" and "German speaking" are situationally constructed in the everyday life of the bilingual class and how they come to be balanced as well as reinforced in the biographical constructions of the pupils.
