Abstract
This study examines temporal variations within sequential storytelling
and compares the productions of 10 young and 10 older speakers. Three
discourse variables that distinguish the storytelling sequences (s
cript,
number of characters and sex of character) were used to analyze three
phonetic variables (number of pauses per second, mean duration of
pauses, and ratio of pause time to speech time). On the whole, results
seem to show that two discourse variables
significantly influence these
phonetic variables, indicating a difficulty of discursive planning for all
speakers. The comparison of stories between the young and older speakers
indicates an increased deficit of discursive planning for old speakers
