Abstract
The cationic complexes Ru<sub>2</sub>[(<i>p</i>-MeC<sub>6</sub>H<sub>4</sub><i>i</i>Pr)<sub>2</sub>(<i>p</i>-SC<sub>6</sub>H<sub>4</sub>Br)<sub>3</sub>]<sup>+</sup> and Rh<sub>2</sub> [(C<sub>5</sub>Me<sub>5</sub>)<sub>2</sub>(<i>p</i>-SC<sub>6</sub>H<sub>4</sub>Br)<sub>3</sub>]<sup>+</sup> are available in quantitative yields from the reaction of <i>p</i>-HSC<sub>6</sub>H<sub>4</sub>Br with [Ru(<i>p</i>-MeC<sub>6</sub>H<sub>4</sub><i>i</i>Pr)Cl<sub>2</sub>]<sub>2</sub> and [Rh(C<sub>5</sub>Me<sub>5</sub>)Cl<sub>2</sub>]<sub>2</sub> respectively. These complexes are found to undergo triple Suzuki coupling with oligophenylene boronic acids to give [Ru<sub>2</sub> (<i>p</i>-MeC<sub>6</sub>H<sub>4</sub><i>i</i>Pr)<sub>2</sub>{<i>p</i>-S-(C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>4</sub>)<sub>n</sub>-C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>5</sub>}<sub>3</sub>]<sup>+</sup> and [Rh<sub>2</sub>(C<sub>5</sub>Me<sub>5</sub>)<sub>2</sub>{<i>p</i>-S-(C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>4</sub>)<sub>n</sub>-C<sub>6</sub>H<sub>5</sub>}<sub>3</sub>]<sup>+</sup> respectively. The star-like trisbromo complexes are potential precursors for the insertion of dinuclear organometallic entities into the main chain of conjugated molecules.
