Abstract
Tridentate aromatic receptors L<sup>1</sup>–L<sup>4</sup> containing the 2,6-bis(benzimidazol-2-yl)pyridine chelating unit are designed to exhibit thermotropic calamitic liquid-crystalline phases; the mesomorphic behaviour is essentially retained in the complex [LuL<sup>2</sup>(NO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>3</sub>].
