Abstract
[Bilingual communicative strategies in the second language classroom? Issues of learning and communicating]
Learners' use of L1 in L2 classroom might not be related to the development of interactional competence in the same way that it seems to be related to linguistic (lexical, grammatical) competence. This article examines the role code switching plays in the former context. An analysis of conversational activities in L2 classrooms at an advanced level reveals a functional axis of code switching: students put to work bilingual-like communicative strategies which are not limited to compensating for linguistic gaps but which also accomplish various communicative functions and relate in diverse ways to L2 acquisition. Relating the results to the development of a pluridimensional and functional language competence elicits implications for educational practice.
