Abstract
This paper examines the recurring association of geese with the protagonist in Lope’s youth comedy Las burlas de amor, comparing it with another one of Lope’s plays from that period, El ganso de oro. To this end, after briefly introducing the plays, we highlight the passages of interest and explain the elements shared by the two texts, beginning with the most superficial ones (date, setting, and dramatic subgenre), and continuing with their respective anagnorisis, the use of a specific comic device (that of the prisoners), and references to the myth of Iphis and Anaxarte. Finally, we analyze two motifs that might be considered residual in Las burlas de amor—magic and the goose—and demonstrate that they can only be explained by drawing precisely on the connection between this comedy and El ganso de oro.
