Abstract
This contribution deals with the interactional functioning and the formal definition of left-detached constructions of the [NP + clitic + VP] type. Based on the analysis of semi-directive interviews in French, we investigate left-dislocations (LD) and so called pseudo-cleft (PC) constructions within an activity type that we call 'listing activity'. In a fist step, we demonstrate that participants use both LD and PC as an interactional resource to structure the listing activity, but that each of the constructions functions differently within this activity type: LD serve to organize additive and contrasting listings while PC operate a step-by-step specification of a given discourse object. Based on this evidence, we then analyze an extract which does not allow for either a formal or a functional distinction between the two constructions. We thus take the interactional functioning of the two constructions within the specific activity type investigated here as a starting point to critically review the categorial distinction between the two.
