Socialization into reading reading competence reading promotion gender stereotypes homogeneity hypothesis
Abstract
The empirical analysis, based on 1'181 self-evaluations by adolescents regarding their home and schooling literacy respectively aims at identifying how hetereogeneity in reading socialisation and the development of reading compentences are related. Findings show that reading socialisation is by far not homogeneous in the sample under scrutiny and differs substantially regarding quality and quantity of the home literacies. Furthermore, the study shows how a generally homogenised model of reading competence based on literacy practices stemming from outside of school particularly orients to groups of higher socio-economic status with their particular reading socialisation and respective knowledge. However important for groups with other reading socialisation profiles, this homogenised assumption is problematic if taken as a basis for designing supporting measures for children and adolescents with problematic features in their schooling literacy process.
