Abstract
The imagological analysis of the national stereotypes present in Cervantes’ Persiles calls attention to the peculiar characters of Antonio and his family, the «barbarous Spaniards». Their barbarism does not stem from a contagion by the inhabitants of the Isla Bárbara and does not limit itself to this northern space. Rather, it is related to the negative image of the Spanish character that had the Europeans of the time, the Black Legend.
