Timoléon de Corinthe en Sicile (344 à 334 av. J.-C.): un exemple de mobilité entre métropole et colonie

Timoléon est un stratège corinthien, chargé par sa cité de mener une expédition militaire en Sicile afin de répondre à l’appel de citoyens syracusains voulant se débarrasser du joug de Denys le Jeune. Une fois cette mission accomplie Timoléon procède ensuite à la libération d’autres cités grecques de la Sicile orientale en renversant leurs tyrans respectifs. Il se confronte parallèlement aux Carthaginois qui occupent la partie occidentale de l’île et entreprend par ailleurs une colonisation de la partie grecque de la Sicile. Ce travail de thèse en deux volumes (I = texte ; II = Testimonia) se propose d’approcher l’épopée de Timoléon en Sicile (344-334 av. J.-C.) sous l’angle analytique de la mobilité et à l’aide notamment des sources littéraires, épigraphiques ainsi que numismatiques. Il s’agit de comprendre comment Timoléon s’est déplacé géographiquement de Corinthe vers la Sicile tout en endossant tout au long de son périple différentes fonctions : stratège, œciste, législateur, héros posthume. Pour ce faire, deux outils analytiques, l’un issu du champ disciplinaire de l’histoire et l’autre de la sociologie, sont privilégiés : les procédures de déplacements et la motilité. Cette étude met en évidence les mobilités horizontale et verticale de Timoléon tout en expliquant le fonctionnement de son itinérance et donne un aperçu d’un monde méditerranéen en mouvement.

Abstract:
Timoleon is a Corinthian strategos, charged by his city to lead a military expedition to Sicily in respond to the request for help of the Syracusan citizens who wanted to get rid of the yoke of Dionysius the Younger. Once this mission was accomplished, Timoleon proceeded to free other Greek cities in the eastern Sicily by overthrowing their respective tyrants. At the same time, he confronted the Carthaginians who occupied the western part of the island and undertook the colonization of the Greek part of Sicily. This thesis in two volumes (I = text; II = Testimonia) proposes to approach the epic of Timoleon in Sicily (344-334 BC) from the analytical point of view its travels with the help of literary, epigraphic, and numismatic sources. The aim of this work is to understand how Timoleon moved geographically from Corinth to Sicily while assuming different functions throughout his journey: strategist, oecist, legislator, posthumous hero. Therefore, to achieve this goal, two analytical tools, one deriving from the disciplinary field of history and one from sociology are privileged: travel procedures and motility. This study highlights Timoleon’s horizontal and vertical mobilities while explaining the purpose of his trips and provides an overview of a Mediterranean world in motion.
