Wrestling with faith: A Transhistoric Study about Doubt in Christian Poetry

Ce mémoire explore la tension entre foi et doute dans la poésie chrétienne, à travers trois périodes. S’appuyant sur le cadre théorique des quatre paradigmes de Frédéric Rognon et sur la pensée de Paul Tillich, l’étude met en lumière la manière dont poètes et poétesses – John Donne, George Herbert, Anne Bradstreet, Emily Dickinson, Alfred Lord Tennyson, C.S. Lewis et Jeanne Murray Walker – transforment l’incertitude spirituelle en espace de réflexion et de renouvellement. À travers une analyse contextualisée de leurs œuvres, l’enquête retrace l’évolution historique des rapports entre croyance et remise en question : des bouleversements doctrinaux et scientifiques du XVIIᵉ siècle, aux défis du positivisme et du pluralisme religieux au XIXᵉ, jusqu’aux interrogations d’une modernité sécularisée. Loin de réduire le doute à une faiblesse, cette étude montre qu’il peut nourrir la foi, la purifier de ses illusions et lui conférer une profondeur renouvelée. En examinant la poésie comme lieu privilégié de cette dialectique, le mémoire réaffirme la valeur universelle et la légitimité intellectuelle d’un dialogue ouvert entre conviction et incertitude.

This thesis examines the tension between faith and doubt in Christian poetry throughout three historical periods. Drawing on Frédéric Rognon’s four paradigms and Paul Tillich’s theological insights, it analyses how poets – John Donne, George Herbert, Anne Bradstreet, Emily Dickinson, Alfred Lord Tennyson, C.S. Lewis, and Jeanne Murray Walker – transform spiritual uncertainty into a space for reflection and renewal. Through historically contextualized readings, the study traces the evolution of belief and questioning: from the doctrinal and scientific upheavals of the seventeenth century, to the challenges of positivism and religious pluralism in the nineteenth century, and finally to the inquiries of a secular modernity. Far from reducing doubt to weakness, this work argues that it can refine faith, strip it of illusions, and grant it renewed depth. By presenting poetry as a privileged site for this dialectic, the thesis reaffirms the universal significance and intellectual legitimacy of an open dialogue between conviction and uncertainty.
