The photograph probably shows Édouard Rentsch during a cavity-reversal test: to verify that the microwave fields in the cavity’s two arms were in phase, the cavity was turned end for end. Because this required breaking the vacuum, measurements in the two orientations were made a day apart (Bonanomi 1962).
