    Amélioration dela qualité de vie à partir de la prospérité précaire. Analyse du rôle des liens sociaux et des stratégies d’adaptation des ménages en Roumanie et en Suisse
    (2016-12-1)
    Cet article examine les stratégies des ménages en situation de prospérité précaire pour améliorer leur qualité de vie en Roumanie et en Suisse. Il avance la recherche qualitative sur le sujet qui est encore rare. La définition de qualité de vie selon Zapf et le concept de lien social selon Paugam constituent le cadre théorique de la recherche. L‟analyse porte sur plusieurs vagues d‟entretiens menés dans des contextes urbains de ces deux pays qui se caractérisent par de différences structurelles, des niveaux de vie inégaux et des histoires politiques dissemblables. Cette comparaison permet de nouveaux éclairages sur les stratégies des ménages et le rôle qu‟y jouent l‟Etat, le marché du travail, la famille et les communautés. Les ménages suisses évoquent des possibilités d‟action plus étendues que les ménages roumains, qui dépendent notamment du marché de travail et de leur famille. Des stratégies dites « d‟adaptation », suivies lorsqu‟un changement de situation n‟est pas possible, sont mises en lumière par cette recherche. Ce nouvel élément va au delà du concept proposé par Paugam et aide à comprendre ou l‟action de la politique sociale est nécessaire : C‟est dans ces cas-là que l‟Etat providence ou des communautés de soutien pourraient prendre un rôle de soutien plus actif.

    Narrating well-being in the context of precarious prosperity: An account of agency framed by culturally embedded happiness and gender beliefs
    (2016)
    Vlase, Ionela
    ;
    This article sets out to critically examine the accounts of well-being produced by a middle-aged Swiss woman living in precarious prosperity. By taking on a feminist reading of the narrative on well-being, the article challenges the taken for granted assumption of the powerful agent in thriving societies. Insights from literature on happiness in nations and gender beliefs enabled addressing the woman’s capability to exert agency, while acknowledging the influence of the context in which narratives are embedded. In addition, the presence of a non-national interviewer appears to be an incentive for the interviewee’s compliance with cultural meta-narratives. The approach of well-being as ‘agential flourishing’ proved helpful in assessing the woman’s capability on a gendered career path in atypical employment to deal with precariousness.

    Precariousness and Quality of Life—a Qualitative Perspective on Quality of Life of Households in Precarious Prosperity in Switzerland and Spain
    (2015)

    Households’ resources and constraints are key components of quality of life (QOL). QOL also depends on how these are evaluated. In times of crisis one expects subjective wellbeing and quality of life to decline. We argue that the quality of life depends on objective living conditions, their subjective evaluation and the ability to maintain or improve the situation of “embedded individuals”. This ability, in turn, depends on the opportunities provided by the state, labour markets, families and communities. We analyse qualitative interviews (2008–2010) with around 25 households in precarious prosperity in two cities (Pamplona, Spain and Lausanne, Switzerland) to elaborate their QOL. Few sampled Swiss households witnessed a decline in socio-economic status, contrary to the Spanish. Domains important to these households for QOL varied according to the opportunity structures: in the Spanish sample QOL was related to the opportunities for income, work, and security to plan ahead; in the Swiss sample to health, work-life balance and loneliness. In both samples, QOL varied according to scope of agency, people’s position within the life course, the households’ past experiences, current situation and future perspectives. Lack of future perspectives and opportunities lowered QOL; reframing, adaption and accepting the situation sometimes moderated QOL. We conclude that apart from living conditions and/or subjective wellbeing, households’ agency within opportunity structures is a promising direction for further research in QOL.
