The First Incunabula of Statius’ Achilleid and their Manuscript Sources : Towards a Detailed Analysis of their Relationship
    (Madrid: Ediciones Complutense, 2023)
The Achilleid of Statius was often disseminated in print in the first decades of the new medium. While the source used for the editio princeps has been identified, an analysis of the relationship between later incunabula and the manuscript tradition remains a desideratum. The difficulties involved in the task are partly due to the plethora of manuscripts (more than 220 extant witnesses). This paper attempts to tackle this problem with regard to the first two editions posterior to the princeps, namely those of Ferrara 1472 and Venice 1472. Systematic examination of more than 60 witnesses now accessible on the website Digital Statius: the Achilleid (achilleid.unige.ch) make it possible, on the one hand, to show that the preparation of each of these editions was mainly based on a manuscript rather than on a previous printed text and, on the other hand, to identify some characteristics – missing lines, rare readings, inverted words – of the manuscripts that the editors used as their main models.

In this paper we would like to share some thoughts with regard to the preparation of our digital critical edition of Statius’ Achilleid. Digital methods open up new research perspectives and change the paradigm for the critical editor of classical texts, both at the level of editing and publishing. The editor now has the opportunity to make available and share every stage of her/his work (in particular, images of all the manuscripts, the process of collation, analysis of the manuscript tradition, editorial choices) and so allow the community of researchers in Classics to validate every stage in the creation of a new edition and encourage broad collaboration. Conceived in the framework of two consecutive projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, the ‘Digital Statius : the Achilleid’ website (https://achilleid.unige.ch/) allows users to move from any given verse in the text to images of 217 among the 224 surviving manuscripts in which the text is transmitted. With the text of the poem at its centre, this platform marks the first step in the construction of a digital environment for the study of the Achilleid. Intended to contain enrichments of various kinds (for example codicological descriptions, an interactive map of the circulation of the manuscripts, translations and commentaries), the website is addressed to both professional scholars interested in the business of editing texts and to students at different levels. After a brief status quaestionis concerning the way the Achilleid has been edited so far, the article presents the goals of our project and the current functionalities of the website, provides details of the methods implemented and outlines long-term developments. Particular emphasis is placed on the specific nature of a critical edition that not only aims to ensure data interoperability, but also provides innovative access to manuscripts by linking image and text at the level of the individual verse.

    (Pisa: ETS, 2020)
The countless miscellaneous volumes of critical and exegetical remarks on ancient Greek and Latin authors that were produced since Calderini, Beroaldo and Poliziano are accompanied by several kinds of paratexts relating to their contents : title-summaries of individual sections (nearly always), indexes, and marginalia. The potential effects of title-summaries on how a given volume of philological miscellanies may be used and how its scholarly discourse may be perceived differ from those of indexes and marginalia due to their specific properties. However, as shown in this article, their actual effects also vary depending on the “paratextual constellation” of the volume in question, that is to say, depending on how title-summaries combine and interact with other indications of contents.

Several readings of the codex Buslidianus of Statius are quoted from Bernartius (1595) and Gronovius (1653) in the recent edition by Hall, Ritchie and Edwards (2007–2008). This manuscript has not yet been identified, and the question whether Bernartius and Gronovius refer to the same manuscript or not has not been answered yet. By examining a collation made by Gronovius, it proves possible both to establish that the codex Buslidianus he used is a manuscript preserved at the National Library of the Netherlands in The Hague, and to suggest that Bernartius used the same source. These findings shed light on the history of the manuscript of The Hague, and they reveal that some readings of those folios that are now lost have been preserved by Gronovius.
