- PublicationAccès libreToday’s Migration-Mobility Nexus in SwitzerlandThis chapter provides a general overview of the Migration-Mobility Nexus in Switzerland. Today’s patterns of migration move on a continuum from long-term and permanent to increasingly temporary and fluid. Based on data from the Migration-Mobility Survey and on theoretical and political considerations, it aims at providing a general empirical overview of the migration flows towards Switzerland. First and on a theoretical level, the two paradigmatic lenses of migration research and mobility studies are presented. Second, the transformation of European migration regimes since the 1970s and its effect on the patterns of migration and mobility are discussed. Third, we show how Switzerland, being part of the European Migration Regime in transformation, can be used as a laboratory to understand the changes in and of an advanced post-industrial society. To this end, we provide a short empirical overview of the immigrant population and their living conditions in the country. Fourth, the chapter provides a set of analytical questions that will be addressed throughout this volume – by means of the Migration-Mobility Survey data – and discussed in the concluding chapter.

; To fully understand migratory flows, their determinants and their consequences for the host countries, researchers increasingly use methods based on life course – or longitudinal – approaches. Such approaches aim at following migrants from their arrival until their departure and at analyzing, among other factors, their integration and assimilation processes into the host society. These kinds of analyses inform to which extend (and after which duration of stay) migrants benefit from the same opportunities as native citizens. The introduction of a unique Personal Identification Number (PIN – corresponding to the social security number) in 2010 in the Swiss administrative registers and a new decree, which came into force in 2013, regulating data linkage for statistical purpose, allow today the development of longitudinal statistics based on population registers and official surveys. One objective of the NCCR On the Move was to create such a database in order to develop longitudinal analyses on migration issues. In this context, the aim of this working paper is to review the process leading to the creation of a new longitudinal database (called Swiss Longitudinal Demographic Database – SLDD). Therefore, we first describe its conceptual framework, by presenting the different available registers, the aims and the target population. Secondly, the article discusses the data linkage and the validation procedures. The paper ends with two examples of possible applications. - PublicationAccès libreLa démographie des étrangers en SuisseLe phénomène migratoire en Suisse a donné lieu à de nombreuses publications portant sur ses impacts économiques, sociaux et politiques. A ce jour, aucune étude n'a étudié spécifiquement les comportements et l'impact démographique de la migration. Cet ouvrage remplit un vide et fournit des informations sur ce thème, en approchant le sujet de quatre manières complémentaires. D'une part, il décrit les comportements de natalité, les migrations internes, la naturalisation et les retours des étrangers vivant en Suisse. II montre que ces comportements dépendent de facteurs individuels (âge, nationalité, niveau de formation, situation familiale) ou liés à la trajectoire migratoire (durée de séjour en Suisse, par exemple). D'autre part, par l'analyse longitudinale d'une cohorte d'étrangers, il dresse le constat d'une migration majoritairement temporaire: le retour au pays reste le modèle dominant parmi les ressortissants étrangers titulaires d'un permis B ou C. Troisièmement, la présentation de deux flux migratoires illustre la variété des motivations à l'origine de la migration et les différentes stratégies d'accès au territoire suisse. Le cas de la migration turque met en particulier en évidence l'inadéquation des politiques face à des modèles de formation du couple fortement ancrés dans cette communauté. Le cas allemand montre pour sa part les nouvelles formes que prend la migration économique. Finalement, l'ouvrage mesure l'impact de la " nouvelle migration ", celle ayant eu lieu au cours des trois dernières décennies, sur la taille et la structure de la population de la Suisse. Cette mesure montre les bénéfices démographiques de la migration internationale, qui freine le vieillissement démographique, évite une décroissance de la population, et garantit la main-d'oeuvre nécessaire à l'économie. Alors que la migration internationale prend un essor considérable depuis quelques années, cet ouvrage fournit dès lors des informations indispensables à sa planification.
